Do you really know and understand how to use links on your web site?
Most people will probably answer, ‘ of course I do’.
It is highly unlikely that they do because even experienced internet marketers get a bit lost when it comes to website links.
Firstly if you regard your website as a whole, you must first consider that there is more than one type of link, and you must understand the relevance of each type of link;
- Navigation Links : navigation links lead visitors between the various pages on your website. Some links might be on every page, and others not, do you know what links should be on each page?
- Product links : product links lead prospective buyers to the products you are advertising. Where do these links lead?
Good mutual reciprocal links may help you to improve your site rank in the search engines, while bad links or over-flooded links may ruin your site ranking. Keep in mind that good ranking also needs a good content , so make sure you have quality content along with the quality links.
Now go over each link individually, do they lead to another page on your website, or do they lead the visitor away and on to another person’s website? In other words to an affiliate webpage. If so, have you checked how easy it is for your visitor to get back to your website? Are they now gone for ever?
What if your link leads to an information page? Some people have links to such sites as Wikipedia or other such information sites.
Be selective about the sites from which you request links. Search engines use sophisticated rules when judging the importance of a link, and the popularity of the site linking to you is a key criteria. One link from a high Ranking site is worth far more than a link from a personal web site.
Below are 8 tips to keep in mind when exchanging links:
1. Relevant : The websites with who you exchange links with must be relevant to your website.
2. Good Content : Websites should have good content, and the content must be relevant too.
3. Selective : Websites should not have more than 20 links on that particular page on which your link will be shown.
4. Anchor Text :Your links title should be followed by a meaningful and positive description of your website.
5. Link Manually : Try to avoid linking through software it will be better if performed manually.
6. Keywords:Your links anchor text should be a little descriptive in stead of merely containing a single or multiple keywords.
7. SE. Friendly : The link page must be indexed in Google and in all other major search engines too.
8. Navigation : The link should directly go to your site and not through any redirection technique.
Beware of flooding your sites with reciprocal links - Many a times, having lots of links may hamper your site’s credibility and the focus of the site visitor. The reciprocal links look good and attracts the site visitor when it maintains the navigation ease.
However if your website is flooded with links, it can hamper the ’stick to the content’ quality, and thus, harming your website’s popularity.
Use free tools for links exchange - Using free tools for link exchange can help you to get into the proper traffic. So, use free tools for your links exchange and make sure they are providing you good links.

Hello, Alan:
Nice informative blog on links on a person’s website. Lots to think about to get it all set up properly.
One thing that I do to keep from “losing” a visitor when they click one of my links is set it up so it opens into a new page. That way, when they close the new page, my website is still on their screen.
I’ve been looking into link exchange tools, as you have suggested, but haven’t made any decisions yet.

Hi GT and Graham,
Thanks for reading my blog, I always wondered why I was not getting a good page rank, because I thought that if I did article marketing and forum posting, that will be sufficient - unfortunately not - so now I am trying to build as many links as possible. However if you learn to link correctly from the start - then you will get a huge boost - my alexa rank has jumped from 1,925,092 in May last month - to 1,131,301 this week.
This was all due to a serious link building campaign.
So I hope that you found this information to be interesting and helpful.
Regards
Alan
